100 Years Irish Free State

100 Years Irish Free State

On Saturday 23rd October we commemorated 100 years of the Irish Free State together with ca. 40 guests at a conference in Leipzig University, held at Campus Jahnallee.

The conference began with some traditional Irish music played by our Irish Folk band as well as words of welcome from Prof. Sabine Asmus, University of Leipzig, and Thomas Bellew from the Embassy of Ireland, Berlin. The first session featured guest speaker Dr. Jenny Farrell from Galway Technical College, Prof. Ralf Haekel (Anglistik), and Ph.D. student Zuzanna Grala from Leipzig University who ignited intensive discussions.

Pádhraic Ó Dochartaigh from Conradh na Gaeilge Bheirlín introduced his bilingual (German-Irish/Gaeilge) traveling pop-up exhibition ‘The Revival of the Irish Language and the Easter Rising 1916’, which was nicely illuminated in the atrium and accompanied by traditional Irish music. During the break, participants could also watch the short movie ‘The Outcast’ based on a short story by Liam O’ Flaherty, which enhanced the topic presented by Dr. Jenny Farrell.

Thereafter, participants enjoyed a poetry recital of three Irish-language poems from students of Irish, Maxi Stolze, Sarah-Sophia Gärtner, and Selina Weis, who read poems from two known contemporary Irish poets, Dairena Ní Chinnéide and Máire Mhac an tSaoi, whose recent death was hence paid due respect, too.

The second round of academic sessions began with Pádhraic Ó Dochartaigh and Professor Joachim Schwend followed by Irish lecturer Emma de Paor and Ph.D. student Lena Krochmann, also sparking vivid discussions. We would like to thank all of our active participants and guests for contributing to such an informative and memorable day and thank you to the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin, who kindly sponsored this event.
